Helmut Lang: The Minimalist Who Disappeared
Helmut Lang walked away from fashion in 2005 and became an artist. The clothes he left behind are now some of the most collected vintage on the market.

At the height of his influence, Helmut Lang sold to Prada Group. Two years later, he walked away — shredding his archive of 6,000 garments and turning them into sculptures. What makes Lang's work so collectible is precisely that it ended. The Lang aesthetic looks as contemporary in 2026 as it did in 1998. A 2003 bondage-strap trouser sells for $400 in New York and $900 in Tokyo. Peak Lang: Spring 1998 (paint-splattered finale), Spring 2000 (transparent layers), Fall 2004 (final collection). The undervalued play: Lang menswear — a blazer from 2001 at $300-500.
